North Korean Hackers Suspected in $200M Euler Exploit & Axie Infinity Hack
18. März 2023• Euler Finance was recently hacked by two attackers, resulting in a loss of $200 million worth of digital assets.
• An address controlled by the Euler Finance hacker has sent 100 Ether ($170,515) to a wallet associated with Ronin Bridge exploiter, which is believed to be the North Korean hacker group Lazarus Group.
• Euler Finance has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to the arrest of its attacker and return of stolen funds.
Euler Finance Exploit
Euler Finance recently fell victim to a flash loan attack resulting in around $200 million worth of digital assets being stolen from the project. The losses occurred over six transactions in dai (DAI), wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), staked Ether (sETH) and USDC, and were carried out by two attackers, according to crypto analytic firm Meta Seluth.
North Korean Involvement
Blockchain data shows that an address controlled by Euler Finance’s hacker has sent 100 Ether ($170,515) to a wallet associated with Ronin Bridge exploiter, which is believed to be the infamous North Korean hacker group Lazarus Group. This raises suspicions that North Korean cybercriminals could potentially be involved in the latest assault on Euler.
Axie Infinity Hack
The hack of Axie Infinity’s Ronin blockchain saw hackers make off with about $625 million worth of Ethereum and USDC after they managed to gain access to five of the nine private keys held by transaction validators. It remains unclear if Lazarus Group is also behind this attack or whether there is some sort of affiliation between the hackers and this entity.
Reward Offered
To encourage anyone with useful information about either attack or any related activity, Euler Finance announced that they have launched a $1 million reward in „the hope that this provides additional incentive for information that leads to the Euler protocol attacker’s arrest and return back all funds extracted by them.“
Conclusion
The recent interactions between wallets linked to both attacks have raised suspicions surrounding North Korea’s involvement; however it remains unclear if there is some sort of affiliation between either entity or not. To help combat this issue further, Euler finance have offered an incentive reward for anyone who provides helpful information leading towards their attacker’s arrest or return back all stolen funds.
